Disco Top Progress

This is my test version of the disco top I'm planning for a friend's Studio 54-themed birthday party next month...

...taking inspiration from the lovely Ms Farrah Fawcett.

I used the Anita Tie Top self-drafted pattern from Sew Over It Vintage, in the hope that I could channel a late 1970's Halston vibe. The fabric is a turquoise luxury crepe which, as the name suggests is beautifully classy and luxurious, but it just doesn't seem disco enough for the party. I did put the colour question to my readers in my last blog post and the response was unanimous - make it shiny and gold. So that's what I'll be doing, wahay!

Style wise it also needs a few tweaks for the full Studio 54 effect. This is what I'm planning:
  • Widen the neckline slightly to make it off-the-shoulder.
  • Lengthen the top to tunic length and straighten the side seams (mine are tapered in) for a more voluminous effect.
  • Remove the bottom band and ties - I can add a self fabric belt around the waist for definition instead.
Hopefully this should result in something suitably disco fabulous, especially in gold fabric. What do you think?

The big decision now is which fabric to use? I may go on the hunt for metallic fabrics to Goldhawk Road this week, but if I'm feeling lazy I've also earmarked a few online contenders:

Gold Lame from Remnant Kings

Robert Kaufman Manchester Metallic in Silver from M is for make. This fabric looks really beautiful and is probably too good for a one-off party top. I might still put it on my Christmas list though!

Gold Metallic Print Cotton from Minerva Crafts

Liquid Satin in Antique Gold from Minerva Crafts

And finally, a latecomer which I just spotted whilst reading this post - Viscose Foil Fabric from Ray Stitch.

The fabric listing includes pictures of what it looks like sewn up, which is super helpful. This might be the one actually.

If you've sewn with metallic fabric before and have any tips, please do share them in the comments.

To complete the look I'll be purchasing a pair of shiny leggings and borrowing my friend's hotbrush to recreate those Farrah flicks. This should give the other tube passengers a good laugh on the night. I've also persuaded Jon to grow a moustache for the occasion, which will give them an even bigger laugh…. x

  1. Wow Jane I love the style of this top! Can't wait to see the final version. It surely has to be a go-to festive season garment after you've worn it to the party! I like the Manchester Metallic and the Viscose foil the best :) x

  3. I have used lame/metallic fabric all of once, so my experience isn't extensive, but the fabric did a number on my rotary cutter blade, so be prepared to replace/sharpen any blades for your next project. My fabric shed a lot and didn't take to pressing very well, but it looks amazing and so much fun when the project is finished. Can't wait to see the results!

    1. I had a similar style black top with gold threads running through it in 1981. I wore it to all my teenage discos! x

  7. The gold liquid satin is beautiful, I just used satin lining to line a coat and it was so gorgeous. I made the Anita top here but mine was a bit big but still very wearable. Jo x

  8. It's got to be silver, I think, with your colouring. The Manchester metallic one would be fabulous!
