Autumn sewing

For me, autumn is even more of a new start than January. There's a definite change in climate and it's the start of a brand, spanking new season. I love sewing for different seasons and I'm looking forward to working with different weights of fabric, longer sleeves, new styles etc. The downside is that I've also got to fit in lots of craft fair sewing as I've committed to three Xmas fairs, two of which are enormous. So my autumnal sewing list is realistically an autumn AND winter list. Here goes….

Abbey coat
Top of the list and something I've been keen to get my teeth into all summer. My fabric and lining are cut and I've prepped the front coat piece to start working on my bound buttonholes.  As soon as school begins next week it's all systems go.

Alma blouse

I'm planning on using this beautiful, grey double gauze fabric from Misformake.

I've sewn with double gauze before, here and here and really like the texture.  Plus it's a magic fabric, it keeps you cool in summer and cosy in winter. I think it will be a perfect match for the Alma blouse. If I get the fit right, I may try a long sleeved version too, but in a less expensive fabric, long sleeves demand a ton of fabric and double gauze isn't a cheap option!

A skirt (or two)
I've been mightily swayed by all the lovely Kelly skirts popping up on blogs recently, but also have my eye on this one seam skirt pattern.

I bought the pattern after seeing Kestrel Finds and Make's cord version and am sorely tempted by this red polka dot cord from Dragonfly Fabrics.

It's expensive though, which is why I'm thinking a skirt. I'll have to shorten it by about a foot, so could probably get away with just buying one metre.

Dress fest
On the other hand, if I do well at my craft fairs, maybe I could stretch to a couple of metres of it... In which case, it would be perfect for version A of this cute as a button dress pattern, gifted to me by Debi

I'm also swayed by the fact that the girl in view A looks like me too…

And finally, I'd like to sew something with a knit fabric, but something a bit more casual than my red Joan dress this time. Maybe this simple, classic dress pattern which Casey kindly sent me?

That's my list and it should keep me out of trouble for a few months!  Any more autumnal sewing plans out there?  As you know, I love stealing being inspired by other people's plans, so tell me, tell me! x

  1. Jane what a collection of super cool plans, with beautiful fabric choices no less. What's so great is your realism ... You've narrowed it down to your priorities and such pretties!! I really must not allow myself to get carried away....my wish list for sewing is ginormous. I need to get some self control and only then will I call them 'sewing plans'. Your autumn collection is going to be stunning and very 'you'

  2. Love both those McCall patterns and of course the legendary one seam skirt, it will look great on you. I also have some bright red cord type fabric for my next one. Hoping to make the Alma too.

  3. Ooh i love all your plans Jane. The double gauze is divine (you must check out Fabric Tales site for more beauties) and McCalls 8877... well... let's just say I may have to create a google shopping alert for this particular pattern - what a cutie. I also nicked your winter coat idea and as soon as I get my pattern (waiting for postie) I'll be buying fabric to make it up in. I'd love to do bound buttonholes for that too so hopefully Karen wil release her extra special guide!

    1. Joanne, I'll send the pattern to you once I've made the dress if you like? I can just see you in it! Good luck with the coat, I say go for it with the bound buttonholes, after my epiphany at Karen's I'm now a convert! x

  5. I love reading about autumn sewing plans, partly because I'm nosy and partly because this is the first time I'll be sewing clothes for autumn and I need some inspiration! The double gauze and corduroy are just gorgeous.

  11. Ooh, lovely! If you want to dew a knit dress, how about hanging out for StephC's Tiramisu dress when the pattern is launched? It is gorgeous!

    1. That's a very good idea and much easier than my plan - the pattern I had in mind is tiny so I'd have to try my hand at re-grading. The Tiramisu would be a great project post-Xmas. Thanks MrsC (yet again!) x

  13. These are all just delightful plans. I love your style and I'm sure that everything is going to be gorgeous!
I'm a Kelly skirt fan - I got the pattern and made two in one week! I'm also a huge fan of the Alma blouse and plan to make plenty more for my spring and summer. It's such a lovely little pattern and I made mine up in no time, I end French seamed the shoulders and side seam - I did add a little inverted pleat to cap sleeves as they are a little puffy on my arms!

  14. Oh you have an exciting list there, I especially like the look of the Alma blouse (version A especially). I too like the change to autumn, I'm quite excited to do my wardrobe change over....only I never really unpacked the summer clothes, just took them out of the storage box when needed but hey-ho, I'm a winter girl anyway. Look forward to seeing how you get along and having my usual sewing envy :) Beth/thelinencat xx
