Vintage Sewing Pattern Pledge

Marie at A Stitching Odyssey has pledged to sew up at least five of her vintage sewing patterns during 2014 and wants us to join her. What a great idea!

There are no strict rules and you don't even have to set yourself a numerical target. It's just your own personal pledge outlining your plans for your vintage sewing patterns. I'm definitely in...

"I, Jane Marland, will sew up at least three of my vintage sewing patterns during 2014."

Last year I made four garments from three vintage sewing patterns (I used one of them twice), so I think my pledge for 2014 is pretty realistic and do-able. These are the patterns I used:

Butterick Bow Blouse

Sew for Victory Dress

1950's sleeveless blouses, here and here
So, which ones will be sewn up this year? Well, very handily, I'm already one down (my vintage raincoat) and have plans to make yet another version of Simplicity 4238. Deciding which other patterns are in the running however, has been taking much longer than I thought. There are quite a few I know I'll never sew up - ever - I just have to have them in my possession. Of the ones left over, I whittled down the following as possibles ….

Slinky vintage PJ's anyone?

These Bermuda shorts are adorable but the pattern would need quite a bit of grading up in size.

This next bunch are definitely the A listers….

The halter neck top is almost a dead cert - I've been a bit obsessed with halter necks recently as evidenced here, and the Vogue pattern I found is perfect, especially view B. It's still a toss up between the Vogue shirt dress (sooooo chic) or the more basic Anne Adams shirt dress. I can see both of them fitting into my wardrobe so it may come down to time and difficulty of pattern. Any preferences?

Is anybody else signed up for the Vintage Sewing Pattern Pledge? I'd love to know your plans and what patterns you have in mind. Happy Tuesday. x

  2. Goodness me, that Vogue pattern is beautiful, it would suit you perfectly. I'm in, and committed to 4 which may include the same pattern more than once! I'm struggling to decide so am gradually whittling down from 66 (I don't know how I ended up with that many - it's a mystery!). It's more tricky than I thought so I'm being tough with myself, have decided I'm not making anything that needs grading! Can't wait to see what you make :)

    1. I found it really hard to whittle them down too. Good advice about the grading, it just makes it seem more like a chore! x

  3. I love the vogue pattern 9236 too. I've signed up to sew 2 vintage patterns - my first time working with vintage ones and tracing them etc!

  4. I live the shaping of that Weldons dress. I should really sign up to sew at least one vintage pattern. So far I haven't made any from my admittedly small stash.

  5. I've signed on to sew from my vintage pattern stash also. But, I haven't set any real goals yet. I really love the lines of that Vogue button front halter you have posted. I can see it looking incredible with skirts and shorts all summer!

  7. I haven't signed on but perhaps I will, I've been very lazy and haven't sewn any vintage patter, BUT that's a good incentive to do it! I love you butterick 9206 pattern!!

  9. Going to sign up! I have a large stash of vintage patterns (mostly 1970s, but most can be made into a 1950s style, which is more my thing) They are mostly from my grandma

    1. Cool, I think lots of 70's patterns can be adapted to a more 50's style. Good luck! x

  11. I love the last pattern 4817. Personally, I always prefer princess seams to darts, so much easier to fit. Maybe I should commit to making one of my vintage patterns, (being as that was my intention when I bought them!)

  12. Ooh, I need to go sign up for this.
    Lovely patterns you have here!
Note on the bermuda shorts, they had a LOT more ease built into women's trousers back then. I made a pair that were smaller than my measurements and they were huge. Except for the waist which is much higher than most bellybuttons :) Do some flat pattern measuring and they might be closer to you than you think.

    1. Yes, good idea. Lots of those 50's waistlines are VERY high aren't they?! x

  13. I've signed up too for five patterns - better get cracking, I haven't started yet! I haven't even decided which ones. I love that mail order pattern 4817, but then I always have been a sucker for a shirt-dress

  18. I've signed up - and I'm including the 70's as vintage simply as I have some I SO want to make (will try to limit it to one til I sew some of my older ones) - and I have some I may never make, but simply had to own! (read: rescue from the 2nd hand shop where they were in danger of being used for crafts - the horror!) ;)

    1. Yes I've got a few rescued ones too! Looking forward to seeing your 70's creations! x

  20. It's a great idea as I tend to neglect my vintage patterns as I think they'll be really hard to work with. I've been hunting for the Butterick 9206 pattern but it never seems to come up on ebay.

  21. I'm joining in too, I think this will be a fun challenge without too much pressure- just the way challenges should be! Like everyone, I have lots of 'dreaming' patterns but I've had a look through my collection & I think I have enough wearable ones in there to aim for 4 makes throughout the year. I'm one down already & am just about to trace out a gorgeous repro pattern from Eva Dress that I plan to wear to a wedding in April. Of your shirt dress patterns the Vogue one is my favourite, but I have to say that I'm seriously coveting Vogue 7454... veiw A is right up my alley :)

  22. I've signed up for 3 including finally making my Barbara from the good life dress, which I feel will fully allow me to buy some brown vintage leather slouchy boots from Etsy woot!

    1. Oh I can't wait to see that! Maybe once it's finished you can make a fabulous Margo dress to keep it company.... x

  23. I was so born in the wrong era. Well, I was born in the 60's, but I should have been an adult then-fashion was fabulous then. I love these vintage patterns!
