Oolong unveiled

My brother got married at the weekend and I finally got to wear my long awaited Oolong dress (my previous posts documenting the making of this dress can be found here and here).  I LOVED wearing this dress and am so pleased with how it turned out.  It's probably one of the most flattering dresses I own - I think because it skims your curves instead of clinging to them!  I took quite a lot off the length as I wanted it to be properly knee length (and I'm short) and this seemed to add to the overall 1940's look.

I don't usually plaster my blog posts with so many pictures but I make no apologies for doing so today because I love this dress so much!  Here one from the actual wedding:

... and here's a peek inside my clutch bag, yes, I couldn't resist making a matching purse!

It was well worth the teeth gnashing of my earlier posts to have a finished dress I was so delighted with.  Thanks everybody for all your valuable advice and encouragement.  I'll just say it one more time, I love this dress..... x

  7. Jane, I am a long-time lurker and fan of your blog, but the wonderousness of this dress means I can lurk no longer and just have to comment! (First time on any sewing blog, ever!) It's stunning and suits you so well. I reckon I am probably around the same height (5ft 2"?) as you and a similar build so am now thinking I may have to have a go at making my own Oolong. Thank you so much for posting these lovely pictures :-)

  8. That really is great, Jane. Hurrah for you powering through previous challenges. What type of fabric is it? The drape of it looks perfect for the dress, and I suspect the right fabric choice is crucial for this make. I can just see it in a heavy crepe de chine. As ever, your taste in prints is faultless. Hurrah, hurrah!

  10. Jane, it's BEAUTIFUL! I love the print and the shortened length. I may have to try that on my next version of this dress! I really should get around to it, you've convinced me. And the matching clutch is perfect. I've been meaning to make one myself. Enjoy!

  40. Just rec'd a gift certificate for Colettr Patterns and now I know exactly what I want. Fabulous!

Just one question: how tall are you? You often mention having to lop off inches from a pattern to accommodate your height, and being shorter than average myself (5'3"), I'm always encouraged by seeing how great the finished product looks on you.

    1. Thank you! I'm 5'2", which is why I'm always lopping inches off all my hems! The oolong pattern is supposed to be longer than knee length, so if you prefer your hems knee length or shorter you'd have to shorten it anyway, regardless of height. Good luck! x

  41. That's it!! I though I recognised you when we met on Friday - so once I'd looked at your Peony I searched for 'Colette' on your blog - and realise I read this years ago when I was um-ing and ah-ing about this pattern! I do in fact own it now, and if I remember correctly that might have something to do with how good it looked on you, but I have never yet made it... [adds another item to her "to-do list"...]

    1. How funny! It was a bit of a nightmare to make because every single piece is cut on the bias (and I cut a size too small initially...) but I was so pleased with it. I still wear it too! x
